Wrinkle Reduction Q & A
What causes wrinkles?
The wrinkles and fine lines that appear on your skin as you age are the result of a variety of coinciding factors, including natural changes, environmental influences, and the long-term effects of repeated facial muscle use.
Natural skin changes
As you age, your skin loses some of its natural elasticity and becomes more fragile. At the same time, it’s impacted by a decline in oil production that makes it noticeably drier. As it becomes drier and less supple, skin grows increasingly prone to wrinkling.
Environmental influences
Long-term exposure to ultraviolet light promotes wrinkling, by breaking down the deep layers of connective tissue that help keep your skin flexible and strong. Smoking, which affects the oxygen-rich blood supply to your epidermis, is a highly controllable environmental factor that promotes active wrinkle formation.
Repeated muscle patterns
Everyday facial expressions and routine muscle use from talking and chewing can cause skin tissue to sag, eventually leading to the formation of wrinkles and deep creases, including crow’s feet and worry lines.
How can I get rid of wrinkles?
There are several different treatment options designed to erase or significantly diminish the appearance of wrinkles.
Static wrinkles, or the lines and creases associated with genetics, sun exposure, and chemical exposure, tend to respond best to CO2 fractional laser skin resurfacing, a treatment that stimulates collagen production to help improve skin tone, texture, and elasticity.
Although deeper lines and creases, such as those caused by repeated facial muscle patterns, also can be improved with skin laser resurfacing treatments, they usually respond best to cosmetic injectables, such as Botox® or dermal fillers. These safe, minimally-invasive products make skin appear smooth for several months.
What are the benefits of laser skin resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing works by delivering precision light beams deep into the dermis of your skin, where it stimulates collagen renewal and helps tighten underlying tissues.
Dr. Irizarry uses CO2 fractional laser technology, which gently ablates, or removes, the uppermost layer of skin before sending rapid-pulse columns of energy deep into the dermis of your skin to promote collagen synthesis.
As your treated skin begins to heal and form new healthy tissue, you’ll see smoother, more youthful skin with far fewer wrinkles.
Even if you’re just targeting wrinkles and lines, laser skin resurfacing also helps diminish the appearance other complexion irregularities, including large pores, age spots, and acne scars.
