Juvederm Q & A

What is Juvéderm®?

Juvéderm is a cosmetic treatment that softens fine lines and wrinkles when injected into your facial muscles. It’s a mixture of collagen and a naturally occurring, moisture-holding carbohydrate called hyaluronic acid that is already in your skin. Together, these ingredients in Juvéderm give you a more youthful appearance.

What improvements will I see in my facial appearance after Juvéderm?

Dr. Irizarry selects Juvéderm products based on the areas of your face you want to rejuvenate — your cheeks, around your eyes and mouth, and/or your lips. Each product is tailored to achieve the following:

  • Juvéderm Voluma XC — more fullness in your cheeks
  • Juvéderm XC and Juvéderm Vollure XC — less noticeable “smile lines” around your mouth and nose
  • Juvéderm Ultra XC and Juvéderm Volbella XC — more fullness to your lips; less noticeable vertical lines beside your mouth

Is there preparation involved before the Juvéderm appointment?

Dr. Irizarry provides instructions for you to follow before the treatment to get the best results with minimal bruising or swelling:

  • Avoid over-the-counter and prescription medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, and St. John’s wort.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for several weeks before the appointment.

How does Juvéderm work?

Juvéderm adds fullness to your facial tissue. As you age, the amount of collagen in your skin decreases, leading to lines and wrinkles. Juvéderm, made of hyaluronic acid and collagen, increases collagen production and brings more fullness to your face, helping to eliminate those grooves in your skin.

Dr. Irizarry marks the area to be treated and injects the Juvéderm, which includes a painkiller to minimize any discomfort. The procedure takes 15 minutes to an hour, depending on how many areas you have done.

Are there any side effects?

As with any medical procedure, you may experience some of the following:

  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Lumps or bumps
  • Minor pain
  • Itching

Dr. Irizarry is a board-certified plastic surgeon. Juvederm is not the only injectable filler that she offers and that she's happy to consult with the patient regarding their best cosmetic option.

What is the recovery time after a Juvéderm procedure?

Recovery time is about 24 hours. You can resume your day but need to avoid wearing makeup, exercising vigorously, going out in the sun, and drinking alcohol during that time.

How long do the effects of Juvéderm last?

You should see some results almost immediately. Depending on the Juvéderm product, your results last from six months to two years. The next time you look in the mirror, you won’t be disappointed. Call or book an appointment online for Juvéderm today.
