Botox Q & A
What is Botox®?
Botox is a prescription medication that keeps your face more youthful looking for several months at a time. Dr. Irizarry injects Botox in the muscles around your eyes and forehead to remove crow’s-feet and frown lines.
How does Botox remove crow’s-feet and wrinkles?
Your fine lines and wrinkles have developed gradually from sun, wind, and other environmental damage in addition to natural aging. Too, every time you smile or frown, the muscles around your eyes and forehead contract. When you’ve done this thousands of times, it’s not hard to understand how lines begin to appear. Botox calms the muscles around your eyes and forehead, helping to immobilize them.
What happens during a Botox appointment?
First, you complete a medical history questionnaire. You need to list all prescribed or over-the-counter medications you’re taking. Dr. Irizarry checks your medications and any allergies to ensure you’re not allergic to the Botox injections. She asks what you expect from the treatment and then completes a facial analysis to determine if you are a good candidate for Botox.
She also shares before and after photos so you have a realistic view of what Botox can do for you. If you're cleared to go ahead, Dr. Irizarry numbs the affected areas, injects Botox into three muscles beside each eye and five muscles in your forehead area.
Is Botox safe?
In 2002, the FDA approved Botox as a cosmetic treatment to temporarily minimize fine lines and wrinkles on your face. As 2018 began, millions of people have had cosmetic Botox treatments, with only a fraction of a percent having serious side effects. It’s approved for use in 78 countries!
As with any medical procedure, you may have mild side effects, including:
- Mild pain, swelling, or bruising
- Headache
- Droopy eyelid
- Crooked smile
- Eye dryness or tearing
Contact Dr. Irizarry right away if the side effects don’t subside or if you have other symptoms such as muscle weakness.
How long does it take to see the results of Botox treatment?
The exciting part of Botox treatment is that you see changes very quickly. Where there used to be fine lines around your eyes, you may see smoother skin again in 24 to 48 hours. The results normally last 3-6 months. Are you ready for this facial transformation? Call or book an appointment online for a Botox consultation with Dr. Irizarry.
